JPGs and DXFs have specific uses. JPGs are best for photos in print-then-cut, not for cutting. DXFs are an older format for cutting machines that don't take SVGs. Cricut Design Space handles them, but SVGs are usually smoother.

What is an SVG File?
SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic. It's a special type of image file. Instead of pixels (like a photo), an SVG uses mathematical paths. Think of it like drawing with a ruler and compass, rather than painting with tiny dots.
This is why SVGs are perfect for cutting machines. Your Cricut machine follows these paths to make precise cuts. You can make an SVG really big or really small, and it will always look crisp and clear. It won't get blurry or pixelated.
Why SVGs are perfect for Cricut

Design Space also has a lot of SVG content available through Cricut Access.
Common SVG problems and fixes
Sometimes, an SVG file might not upload correctly to Design Space or might not appear as cut lines.
- Problem: The SVG uploads as a single image, and you can't ungroup it.
- Fix: The file might not be a true SVG, or it might be improperly saved. Try opening it in Inkscape or Illustrator to see if it's actually vector. Sometimes, designers "flatten" SVGs, making them one layer. You might need to find a different file.
- Problem: The SVG looks blurry or pixelated after uploading.
- Fix: This is very rare for a true SVG. Double-check that you actually uploaded an SVG file and not a JPG or PNG that was renamed as .svg.
- Problem: The SVG is huge or tiny when it first uploads.
- Fix: This is normal. Just use the resize handles or the size input box in Design Space to get it to your desired dimensions. SVGs scale perfectly, so no quality loss here.
- Problem: Lines are missing or look jagged in Design Space.
- Fix: This could be a poorly designed or exported SVG. Sometimes, complex SVGs can have tiny imperfections. Zoom in closely in Design Space to inspect. If it's bad, try a different SVG.
What is a PNG File?
PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic. It's a type of raster image file, which means it's made up of tiny little squares called pixels. Think of it like a photograph. Each pixel has a specific color.
The main superpower of a PNG file is its ability to have a transparent background. This means the image itself can be a shape, a logo, or text, and everything around it is invisible. You don't get that annoying white box you often see with JPGs.
Why PNGs are good for Cricut Print Then Cut
PNGs are fantastic for Cricut's Print Then Cut feature. You design something in Design Space, send it to your home printer, and then your Cricut machine cuts around the printed design. Because PNGs can have transparent backgrounds, your printer only prints the design, and your Cricut cuts only the design. There's no extra white border unless you add one on purpose.
For example, if you download a cute ghost PNG for Halloween, you can print it onto sticker paper. The Cricut will then cut precisely around the ghost shape, leaving no white edges.
When to use PNG files
You should use PNG files primarily for Print Then Cut projects where transparency is important. How to get PNG files
PNG files are very common online. Many digital paper packs, clip art sets, and free graphics are offered as PNGs. You can also create your own PNGs using image editing software like Canva, Photoshop, or GIMP. When saving, just make sure to select the "transparent background" option if you need it.
Common PNG problems and fixes
PNGs usually behave well, but sometimes you run into issues.
- Problem: The PNG uploads with a white background, even though it was supposed to be transparent.
- Fix: The file might not have been saved correctly with transparency, or the software you used to create it didn't preserve the transparency. Check your original file. Sometimes, Design Space's auto-clean can remove a background if it's a very clear, solid white.
- Problem: The PNG looks pixelated or low resolution when printed or enlarged.
- Fix: PNGs are pixel-based. If you try to make a small PNG much larger, the pixels will become visible. Always try to use high-resolution PNGs for Print Then Cut, especially if they will be printed larger than their original size. There's no way to fix a low-resolution PNG; you need a better source file.
- Problem: Design Space struggles to find the cut lines on a complex PNG.
- Fix: If you're trying to cut a PNG (not Print Then Cut), and it has a lot of colors or intricate details, Design Space will have trouble. This is a sign you should really be using an SVG for cutting. If you must use the PNG, try refining the selection tool in Design Space's upload screen, increasing the "color tolerance."
What is a JPG File?
JPG, or JPEG, stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. It's another type of raster image file, just like a PNG. This means it's made up of pixels. JPGs are incredibly common. They are the go-to file format for photographs.
The main difference between a JPG and a PNG is that JPGs do not support transparency. They always have a solid background, usually white, in an image editor. This is because JPGs use a "lossy" compression method. This means they discard some image data to make the file size smaller. This works great for photos where slight color variations aren't noticeable, but it makes transparency impossible.
Why JPGs are okay for Cricut Print Then Cut (sometimes)
You can use JPG files for Cricut Print Then Cut projects, particularly if you are printing a photograph or an image that already has a solid background. Since JPGs don't support transparency, any white or colored background will be printed. Then, your Cricut will cut around the entire rectangular shape of the image, or you can manually try to remove a solid background in Design Space, just like with a PNG.
If you're printing a family photo onto magnet paper to cut out neat rectangles, a JPG works perfectly. But if you want to print a custom shape with no background, a PNG is the better choice.
When to use JPG files
Use JPG files for Print Then Cut projects where the image is a photograph or where you want a solid background. If you're designing a greeting card and want to include a picture of your pet, a JPG is fine. If you want to print an image that already has a white border and you want to keep that border, a JPG is also suitable.
You should never use a JPG for cutting-only projects. Design Space will not be able to create clean cut lines from a JPG without a lot of manual work from you. It will only see a big block of pixels. If you try, you'll end up with jagged, ugly cuts.
How to get JPG files
JPG files are everywhere. Your phone takes pictures in JPG format. Most images you find online that aren't transparent are JPGs. You can also save almost any image as a JPG using photo editing software.
Common JPG problems and fixes
JPGs are pretty straightforward, but issues usually arise when you try to make them do something they're not designed for.
- Problem: The JPG looks pixelated or low quality when printed or enlarged.
- Fix: Like PNGs, JPGs are pixel-based. If your source JPG has a low resolution, it will look bad when you try to print it large. Always use high-resolution JPGs for Print Then Cut. You can't improve the resolution of a JPG once it's saved.
- Problem: You upload a JPG, and it has a white box around your image that you don't want.
- Fix: This is expected with JPGs. If you need a transparent background, you need a PNG or an SVG. In Design Space's upload process, you can try to "erase" the white background using the selection tool, but it's rarely as clean as a true PNG.
- Problem: You tried to cut a JPG, and it's a mess.
- Fix: Stop trying to cut JPGs directly! They are not for cutting. You need an SVG for clean cuts. If you have a JPG image you desperately want to cut, you'd need to convert it to an SVG using a separate software, which is often a complex process.
What is a DXF File?
DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format. It's an older CAD (Computer-Aided Design) file format. Think of CAD as the software engineers and architects use to design things. DXF was created by Autodesk to allow people to share drawings between different CAD programs.
Like SVGs, DXF files are vector-based. This means they use mathematical paths, not pixels. So, theoretically, you can resize them without losing quality. However, DXFs are not as refined for crafting as SVGs are.
Why DXFs are sometimes used for Cricut
Before Cricut Design Space fully embraced SVG files, DXF was sometimes used as an alternative vector format. Some older cutting machines or specific software might still rely on DXF. If you're using an older version of Design Space or if you receive a file that only comes in DXF, it can be cut by your Cricut.
However, modern Cricut users hardly ever choose DXF over SVG. SVGs are simply better supported and easier to work with.
When to use DXF files
Only use DXF files if you absolutely have to. This usually means:
- You have a cutting machine that only accepts DXF files (not common for newer Cricuts).
- A designer provides a cutting file only in DXF format, and no SVG option is available.
For 99% of your Cricut projects, stick to SVGs.
How to get DXF files
DXF files are less common in the crafting world compared to SVGs, PNGs, and JPGs. You might find them on some older craft sites or in CAD-specific communities. Some design software, like Inkscape, can export designs as DXF, but it's typically an extra step for Cricut users.

- Fix: This is a common issue with DXFs. They often lose grouping information during export. After uploading to Design Space, you'll need to select all parts of your design and use the "Weld" or "Attach" functions to combine them as needed. This can be time-consuming for complex designs.
- Problem: The DXF lines look very thin or disappear after uploading.
- Fix: Sometimes the scale of DXF files can be off. Try zooming in or out significantly in Design Space after uploading. If parts are truly missing, the DXF might be corrupted or poorly exported.
- Problem: Text in the DXF is not recognized or is distorted.
- Fix: Like many vector formats, text needs to be "converted to paths" or "outlined" before saving as a DXF if you want it to be cut lines. If the text isn't outlined, it might not appear correctly or often won't upload at all.

- Why NOT DXF (usually)? While DXFs are vector, they often upload into Design Space as many individual, unconnected lines. You'll spend valuable crafting time attaching and welding everything. SVGs are generally saved in a more "ready-to-use" format for Cricut.

For Print Then Cut Projects

- Why PNG? If you need your printed design to have a transparent background (meaning only the design prints, and your Cricut cuts around its precise shape), a PNG is your go-to. This is perfect for stickers, custom labels, and printed iron-ons where you don't want a white border.
- Why JPG? If your design is a photograph, or if it already has a solid background (like a patterned rectangle you want to print and cut), a JPG works great. You don't need transparency for these. JPGs are also typically smaller file sizes for photos.
- Why NOT SVG? While Design Space can technically "flatten" an SVG for Print Then Cut, SVGs aren't designed for full-color photographic printing. If you have a complex, multi-layered SVG, it will flatten into a single print layer, and you might as well have started with a PNG. For simple text or shapes that you want to color and print, an SVG works fine, but a high-resolution PNG is usually simpler for complex images or photos.
