Setting up a free SVG file in Lightburn, Glowforge or xTool

Import the SVG at its native size, then scale the whole design to the finished dimension before you touch power settings — scaling afterwards changes how much heat each millimetre of path receives.

Assign operations next. The outer silhouette becomes a cut, thin interior detail becomes a score, and any solid filled shape becomes an engrave. In Lightburn this is layer-by-layer; in Glowforge the interface groups steps by colour automatically.

  • Basswood 3mm — a good default for ornaments, tags and coasters
  • Plywood 6mm — signs, stands and anything that needs rigidity
  • Cast acrylic — cuts with a polished edge; extruded acrylic engraves poorly
  • Leather and cork — low power, high speed, good extraction
  • Never cut PVC, vinyl or unknown plastics

Kerf, small detail and material tests

Every laser removes a little material along the cut line. On interlocking or inlay work, measure your kerf on a test square and offset the paths by about half that width so pieces fit without forcing.

Very fine detail — thin script lettering in particular — can char or fall out of a wood cut. Either enlarge the design, thicken the strokes in your editor, or switch that section from cut to score.

How do I prepare an SVG for a laser cutter?
Import the SVG, scale it to the finished size, then assign operations by colour or layer: outer outline to cut, interior detail to score or engrave. Set power and speed for your material, and always test on an offcut of the same stock.
What is the difference between cutting, scoring and engraving?
Cutting passes fully through the material, scoring marks a shallow line without going through, and engraving removes a surface layer across a filled area. The same SVG can drive all three depending on how you map its paths.
Which materials suit these laser cut files?
Basswood and plywood between 3mm and 6mm, cast acrylic, leather, cork, card and slate all work well. Never laser PVC or vinyl — the fumes are corrosive and dangerous.
Do the files include kerf compensation?
No. Kerf depends on your machine, lens and material, so the paths are drawn at true size. For interlocking pieces, offset the paths by roughly half your measured kerf in your laser software.
Can I sell laser cut products made from these files?
You can sell the finished physical items you cut yourself. Selling or redistributing the digital file, or listing the artwork as a downloadable product, is not allowed. The license page has the full wording.
